PURPOSE
The purpose of this
sutural expansion appliance is to widen the upper jaw and teeth.
HOW LONG?
The appliance will be
in the mouth for approximately 4 months. You will be actively turning the appliance for about 3 weeks of that time depending on the amount of expansion needed. If any part of the
appliance should become loose or uncemented, please notify us immediately.
HOW TO OPERATE
Place the "key" in
the small hole in the screw portion of the appliance to the depth of about 1/4th inch. Push the key back toward the throat until it solidly hits the bar and cannot be turned any
further. Remove the key out of the hole by withdrawing it back toward the throat. Don't bring the key back forward to remove it. Turn twice per day - once in the morning and
once in the evening.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The patient should
expect some pressure in the nose area after the appliance is turned. If anything more than pressure is felt, turn only once per day. A large space will develop between the two front
teeth. It will close in its own in about 4 weeks. Speaking will be more difficult.
CLEANING
It is most important to
clean the roof of the mouth thoroughly with an irrigator (water pic).
APPOINTMENTS
If you can't make it
to a regular scheduled appointment, stop turning the expander on the day of your appointment or it can go too far.
